Wilkum > Parks and Recreation Opportunities in Geauga County. TourGeauga
Thousands of years ago retreating glaciers scraped across Ohio’s Appalachian Plateau and left behind rich topsoil, ledges of Sharon Conglomerate, and valleys that became the headwaters of three major rivers.
The Cuyahoga, Grand, & Chagrin rivers all rise out of Geauga County, flowing south then making their way to Lake Erie.
The beautiful and diverse landscape of Geauga County, rich with hills, valleys, farmland and forests captivates even the casual outdoorsman with its various offerings of recreation.
Geauga County has well over 10,000 acres of parks and preserved lands. Punderson State Park, located in Newbury Township, features a natural lake, resort manor house, family cottages, golf course, scenic campground, marina, and sled hill that provide a myriad of recreational opportunities for year-round visitors. Geauga Park District manages 15 open parks and two nature centers that feature outstanding art displays, natural history exhibits, & public programs.
More than 50 miles of trails wander through the parks that provide opportunities for hiking, jogging, & cross-country skiing. Selected trails are open for horseback riding or bicycling. Newly-opened, The Maple Highlands Trail, has over 12 miles of paved access for bicycles, pedestrians, strollers and wheelchairs. It also connects with Lake Metroparks Greenway bike trail to the north.
If you prefer water activities pack up your fishing poles to enjoy a day on one of the area lakes or take a trip down the Cuyahoga River. You can rent a canoe, kayak or fishing boat or bring your own. A visit to Pioneer Waterland will suit the whole family, with its variety of wet and dry activities. However you define fun, there is something for you in Geauga County.
Golfers can choose from ten public courses as well as driving ranges and private courses. Take a lesson from one of the pros or just go out and hit a few.
To the west of Chardon stop and visit the Lake Metroparks Farmpark, and experience a hands-on look at life on a farm, and be sure to catch one or more of their many special events throughout the year.
